Dependant
on the local computer and its network, the effectiveness
of these safety measures may vary.
·
Make back-up copies of important documents or files
and store them on separate disks or cds. This will
also protect them from accidental deletion, disk failure,
and other possible damages.
·
Whenever a person uses a computer in a computer lab,
they should reboot or run "cleanup" before
starting and ending sessions.
·
Do not share commercial software with anyone. It is
a violation of the author's copyright to distribute
such materials. If these materials are on disks that
have been made by the distributor (not the company)
there is potential for virus spreading.
·
Always scan files that are downloaded from the Internet.
·
When you get public domain software (freeware) for
which the author has granted permission to make copies,
get it from a reliable source (an individual that
you do not know is not a reliable source). Before
you run the program, use an anti-virus program on
it to inspect for any known viruses.
·
Always scan diskettes and files after using them on
another computer.
·
Watch out for double extensions like a file with "myfile.avi.vbs"
or "myfile.jpg.exe" it is the last extension
that determines the file type. Never run (i.e. click
on) .exe files without at least scanning them, and
never if they are from unreliable sources.
